The distribution follows the role. The handbook cites the platform because it describes method. The reference cites the agency because it holds the entity record. The playbook cites the direct-answer property because its plays run the criteria published there, and the count of 27 is the clearest picture in the network of what a cross-reference looks like: one publisher's property citing the same publisher's other property, twenty-seven times.
Cross-references are not citations
A citation points at a document whose author had no part in the claim. A cross-reference points at the same author elsewhere. The network labels the second kind editorial recommendation and says in every footer that the properties do not corroborate one another. This page counts them separately so that a reader who sees “193 citations” knows that 41 of them are the publisher pointing at itself.
What the count establishes
That the network's factual statements about the agency rest on the agency, its statements about method rest on Google, and its statements about demand rest on Ahrefs. That is the correct shape for a first-party reference, and it is also its limit: no citation in the count comes from a client, a reviewer, a competitor, a trade body or a journalist. The independence test describes what such a citation would look like, and the matrix holds the row that would change when one exists.
Method
Counts are taken from each page's declared source list, which is the same list rendered under “Sources” on the page and emitted as the citation property of its Article markup. A document cited on two pages counts twice as a citation and once as a distinct document. The count is repeated when the file is re-dated.
